Founded by the Romans for its strategic location, it became such an important port city that they named it the capital of Hispania Ulterior. Today, their mighty bridge still stands, alluding to the historic landmarks awaiting visitors in the city. Even the status of a Roman capital was eclipsed when the city became the capital of the Moorish kingdom of El-Andalus. The height of Islamic sophistication, it was during this time that the massive Mezquita mosque was erected. Even the reconquering Christians in 1236 were so awed by its beauty that they left it standing, building their cathedral amongst its arches and columns. Today, the mosque still stands as one of the world's greatest Islamic buildings, with the ornate church creating an extraordinary architectural fusion.
