Car trip from Florence to Sorrento

Leaving Florence's Renaissance legacy behind, this car trip’s distance covers approximately 318 - 364 miles (512 - 586 km) of picturesque Italian countryside. You'll pass through endless vineyards, olive groves, medieval towns, and glimpses of the Tyrrhenian Sea until you arrive in Sorrento, the Gateway to the Amalfi Coast.

Get your camera ready as you hit the road

Set aside a couple of stops to enjoy local delicacies along the way. You can taste Tuscan dishes in Chianti to authentic Neapolitan pizza in Naples. The drive typically takes around 5-7 hours, depending on traffic and your desired stops.

Plan your itinerary to include visits to historic gems like Rome or Naples for added exploration and cultural immersion. Remember, there are tolls on certain highway sections, so be prepared to have Euros on hand or cards for smooth travel if you're driving yourself. Of course, when you take a private car with Daytrip, you don't have to worry about any of that.

Not only is a private car the only direct way to get from Florence to Sorrento, but it also gives you the freedom to explore Sorrento's enchanting surroundings, including the Amalfi Coast, the ancient ruins of Pompeii, and the island of Capri. Get ready for an adventure-filled road trip and make unforgettable memories along the way.

About Sorrento

Traveling from Florence to Sorrento leads you to a treasure trove of art, culture, and history. Picture streets filled with the scent of fresh lemons. Bustling markets with local delights, and a vibrant atmosphere that captures the essence of Italian charm. Oh, and swimming in the sparkling waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Yup, that’s Sorrento.

Sorrento, situated in southern Italy, holds a significant place in history. The town's strategic location overlooking the Bay of Naples has made it a pivotal maritime hub since antiquity. It was founded by the Greeks and later became something of a holiday destination for the Romans.

The landmarks

One of Sorrento's notable landmarks is the Cathedral of Saints Philip and James, a splendid example of medieval architecture. Built in the 11th century, it stands as a testament to the town's religious and cultural heritage. Another iconic site is the Vallone dei Mulini, or the Valley of the Mills, an archaeological site that showcases the remnants of ancient flour mills nestled amidst vegetation.

Increased accessibility

Sorrento's transportation infrastructure has evolved over the centuries to accommodate the growing influx of visitors. In the past, travel to Sorrento was predominantly undertaken by sea, with ships and boats ferrying passengers from nearby ports. However, with the advent of modern transportation, such as trains and automobiles, accessibility to Sorrento has significantly improved.

The introduction of the Circumvesuviana railway in the late 19th century revolutionized travel to Sorrento, providing a convenient and affordable means of transportation from Naples and other nearby cities. Now millions of people pass through Sorrento every year, most heading to the UNESCO-listed Amalfi Coast.

From Florence to Sorrento: Travel tips

Embrace the adventure and follow these travel tips to enjoy your journey from Florence to Sorrento to the fullest.

Get a SIM card

Florence is big enough that you could get away using the free wifi you find around the city. But Sorrento is much smaller, and free wifi is much less prevalent. And what about on the road or in small villages on the way? If you need constant internet access and don't have a roaming plan, get your own SIM card. WindTre has great coverage throughout Italy, ensuring that you can be contacted anywhere on the road. Keep in mind there is an activation fee for SIM cards and no e-SIMs are available for tourists with prepaid packages.

Carry cash

Cash is still king in Italy, and this goes doubly true for smaller towns. It's a good idea to keep euros on hand for day-to-day expenses like bathrooms or lunch in a local ristorante. Also, make sure you inform your bank that you’re traveling abroad so that when you do make card payments, it won’t be blocked by fraud protection.

Stop for sightseeing

At 5.5 hours, you might get a bit stir-crazy on the drive from Florence to Sorrento. Fortunately, you can easily add some excitement while stretching your legs by adding sightseeing stops. Wander the medieval streets of Lucignano, hike the infamous Mt. Vesuvius, stop for lunch and wine at Cantine del Vesuvio, or step back in time at the Pompeii archaeological site. When you travel by private car with Daytrip, your driver will watch your luggage, so you can focus on enjoying yourself!

Things to do when you get to Sorrento

You’ve just been seated for over 5 hours coming from Florence. Now it’s time to stretch your feet and hit the streets. Let’s dive into the best things to do when you get to Sorrento.

Explore the historic center

First things first, you didn’t travel this far to miss the historic center of Sorrento. Wander through the narrow streets lined with charming restaurants and shops selling local crafts, limoncello, and handmade clothing. The Piazza Tasso is a great starting point. Perfect for sipping espressos and people-watching.

Visit the Duomo di Sorrento, a 15th-century cathedral with beautiful frescoes and a serene atmosphere. Nearby, the Villa Comunale Park offers panoramic views of Mount Vesuvius and the Gulf of Naples, perfect for a leisurely stroll or a romantic sunset picnic. The Museo Bottega della Tarsia Lignea is another fun stop. Housed in an 18th-century palazzo with a Pompeian Red façade, this small museum is dedicated to the local art of marquetry, a veneer decorating technique.

Conquer the coast

Hop on a boat tour along the stunning Amalfi Coast. Rugged cliffs, hidden coves, and crystal-clear waters make the ride worth it. You can even take a day trip to the island of Capri, known for its Blue Grotto and upscale boutiques.

And if you're up for some beach time, head to Marina Grande or Marina Piccola, where you can soak up the Mediterranean sun and take a refreshing dip in the water.

Feast on local flavors

A trip to Sorrento wouldn’t be complete without indulging in the local cuisine. Treat your taste buds to a culinary adventure by trying traditional dishes like gnocchi alla sorrentina, fresh seafood pasta, and famous lemon-infused delicacies.

If you can't get your fill of the local food scene, there's plenty of other activities like:

  • Farm and food tours
  • Pizza making
  • Pasta making classes
  • Limoncello factory tours

Don’t forget to shop for souvenirs

Take a piece of Sorrento home with you. Sorrento lemons are a local icon, so you'll find everything from lemon products like limoncello to lemon-themed handcrafted ceramics. Then there's local wines and olive oils, or dried pastas so you can relive your Sorrentine dining experiences at home.

When is the best time to visit Sorrento

Planning your trip from Florence to Sorrento is a joy because Sorrento has something to offer year-round. But of course, the best time for you depends on what you're looking for.

Summer in Sorrento

If you're all about sunny beach days and warm walks, then the summer months from June to August are ideal. This is when Sorrento shines with its Mediterranean climate, perfect for soaking up the sun and enjoying outdoor activities. However, do keep in mind that this is also peak tourist season, so expect crowds and higher prices.

Spring, fall, and winter in Sorrento

For a quieter experience with still pleasant weather, consider visiting during spring (April to May) or fall (September to October). These shoulder months are generally the best time to visit Sorrento. The weather is still delightful, but you'll find fewer tourists and potentially better deals on accommodations. Winter (November to February) in Sorrento is mild, making it a great off-season choice if you want to avoid crowds and don't mind cooler temperatures and the occasional rainy day.

    Positive Experience with Shared Shuttle

I booked their shared shuttle from Positano to Naples airport and it was a great experience! It was on time, the driver was friendly and got us there very efficiently! They also sent over a live tracking link prior to your shared shuttle so you can keep up to date on where your driver is which was very helpful. It was also very inexpensive!

Paris to Bruges in comfort, style and safety

Trip was excellent if a bit expensive because of our last minute booking. But for 4 people it was a great alternative to the trains with no switching required. Our driver Fernando was excellent. He arrive a little early, informed us he was there with no pressure to start until we were ready, and he handled our bags well at both the pickup and drop off. Well done.

    Beautiful gem of a hotel

Il Giardino di Ballaro is exquisite! A little haven in a busy part of the city. The property is beautifully restored. Our suite was amazing - two bathrooms and little separate dressing and sitting rooms. And the staff were lovely - incredibly attentive to our needs, booking a taxi and even providing a takeaway breakfast for our early airport departure. Cannot recommend highly enough!

All Daytrip bookings are one way. If you need a return trip on a different date, simply book this as a separate one-way trip. For a same-day excursion, please request a custom trip. If you plan to stay more than a couple hours, we still recommend booking two one way trips so you're not paying a driver for waiting.
For Daytrip’s private service, you can cancel for a full refund up to 24 hours before departure. For the Daytrip Pool shared shuttle, we offer 3 ticket options when booking: Non-refundable, Flexible with cancellations 24-hours before departure, and Super-flexible with cancellations up to 15-minutes before departure. While you can cancel your booking for a full refund up to 24 hours in advance, changes requested under 36 hours are subject to driver availability, especially in the high season.
Simply choose your origin and destination via our homepage and enter your departure date and time. Browse and add sightseeing stops along the way by following the booking instructions provided on screen. It's a simple, easy, and fun way to book your next adventure!
